

Dr. Smith trained in orthopaedic surgery at the University of California,San Francisco. He completed a year of specialty training at the University of Hong Kong in spinal surgery orthopaedics.
He returned to the Bay Area where he was Chief of Orthopaedics at Highland-Alameda County Hospital for eight years. He was appointed Professor and Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, Texas where he taught and practiced for seven years. He then returned to San Francisco in 1985 to join California Pacific Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine.
He is Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California in San Francisco and serves as Orthopaedic Director of Operation Rainbow, a volunteer orthopaedic surgery group which provides surgical care to underdeveloped countries.
