Primary Care Sports Medicine

Rowan Paul M.D. is a Sports Medicine physician and a board certified Family Physician who treats all athletes and active people of all ages. He has treated everyone from recreational to the professional athletes.

Dr. Rowan Paul has a special interest in exercise prescription as a means of preventive and therapeutic health. His goal is to have all his patients be regularly physically active so they can live healthier, more productive lives.

Dr. Paul specializes in non-operative treatment of the shoulder, knee, ankle, foot and spine. He performs many fluoroscopically guided procedures to alleviate pain, such as; trans-foraminal epidural injections of the spine, selective nerve root blocks, caudal with catheter and facet injections.

Dr. Paul has training in running gait analysis and bicycling performance optimization as well as the diagnosis and treatment of sports hernia (athletic pubalgia) and hip problems such as femoral acetabular impingement. Additionally, he is interested in overuse injuries that lead to tendonitis and tendonopathy as well as injury prevention, concussion, osteoarthritis and exercise nutrition.

As part of Dr. Paul's experience he has been a team physician for collegiate and professional sports such as football, soccer, track and field, skiing, snowboarding and gymnastics. He has covered high profile events such as World Cup speed skating, alpine, and snowboarding championships, numerous marathons, the U.S. Olympic development cross country skiing team as well as the Sugar Bowl winning #2 ranked University of Utah football team.

Dr. Paul has presented and published at national conferences and journals in primary care sports medicine. He has also been featured on "Health Radio," "Women's Health Daily Site", "Experience Life Magazine," and writes a regular sports medicine blog at "http://shapeup.righthealth.com."

He was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, then came to the U.S. for his undergraduate education at Brown University. He is currently an active triathlete, marathon runner, martial artist, skier/snowboarder and outdoorsman who loves animals, good food, engineering and thinking about potential ways to improve our world, especially in the realm of health care and energy policy. As such, he is an avid fan of San Francisco and all the city and surrounding bay area has to offer!
