Currently practicing at California Pacific Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Center, Dr. Peter W. Callander specializes in hip and knee replacements with an emphasis in minimally invasive techniques. He is a noted hip-resurfacing specialist and was one of the first U.S. physicians exclusively selected to train with Dr. Derek McMinn, inventor of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing technique, after the Food and Drug Administration approved the procedure in 2006.
Dr. Callander received his undergraduate degree in biology from Stanford University and his medical degree from Saint Louis University, where he graduated with Cum Laude honors and was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society (the “Phi Beta Kappa” of medical schools). He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of California, Davis, where he earned an M.D. Distinction in Research. He completed his fellowship training in hip and knee replacement surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Cornell University in New York City.
Dr. Callander has extensive clinical training and experience in all aspects of surgical and non-surgical management of arthritis of the hip and knee. During his fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery, Dr. Callander trained in all the latest techniques of hip and knee replacement, minimally invasive surgery, joint reconstruction, and revision hip and knee replacements.
He has been published in numerous medical publications and has made presentations on his area of specialty both regionally and nationally at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Earlier in his career, Dr. Callander provided humanitarian medical and surgical work for Operation Rainbow in Guatemala and International Relief efforts in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Dr. Callander has appeared as an expert resource on KRON –TV in San Francisco. He is active in clinical research with both implant designs and bearing surfaces. Currently, Dr. Callander serves as an orthopedic consultant for the San Francisco Ballet. He lives in Marin County with his wife and daughter and enjoys the outdoors, especially, running and skiing.
